The Via Mercatorum — literally “the merchants’ road” — is an ancient network of paths and mule tracks that, in the Middle Ages, connected Bergamo with the Val Brembana and the Valtellina, serving for centuries as the main trade route before the construction of the Via Priula in 1593.

This historic route winds through mountainous landscapes, charming villages, and scenic natural views, offering a unique glimpse into the past and the historic trade routes that once linked communities and cultures.

One particularly enchanting section is the stretch between Cornello dei Tasso and Oneta — a small but fascinating village that is part of San Giovanni Bianco, also known for the House of Harlequin. Today this 15th‑century building houses a museum dedicated to the famous commedia dell’arte mask.

According to local tradition, the house — originally the residence of the noble Grataroli family — was associated with the figure of Harlequin, a beloved character from the Italian theatrical tradition, and it preserves artifacts and stories linked to his history and theatrical culture.
